Give each proposed test a job
- Ask which care question this test is meant to settle.
- Ask how the findings might affect the decision about care.
- Ask where the sample will be taken and who sends the order.
- Ask who will read the result, explain it and contact you.
- Ask what the bill includes and whether repeat tests would be billed apart.
The tests depend on the care being considered
There is no blood-test rule in general federal law that applies before every prescription. This was checked on 26 September 2026.
Tests may still be needed because of rules for the particular medicine, state rules or your health problem.
That leaves a useful question for the appointment: “Which tests do you need for me, and why?” A long test menu is not an explanation.
Make space for an unclear result
“Does this result answer the question?” “Does it need another look?” “Who can explain it in plain words?” You can take those questions back to the person who ordered the test.
