A reading guide to online care

Screen or room

The setting is a choice to talk through.

Think about what you want to discuss. Could you use a phone or video call at home? Ask what would need a visit in person.

Keep the care question the same

The same care is expected for your health problem during an online visit as during a visit in a room. The Federation of State Medical Boards takes this position in its guidance. That guidance was checked on 17 September 2026.

Ask what the visit can cover and which parts of the health check need to happen in person.

Compare the setting Both settings are shown.

For an online visit

  • Write down where you will be during the appointment.
  • Ask whether the visit uses video, a call or messages read later.
  • Find a quiet place for the conversation. Keep your medicine list where you can read it.

A question to keep

“What would make you ask me to attend in person?”

Whether a phone call, video call or online form can lead to a prescription depends on state rules. Those rules differ as of 26 September 2026.

For a room visit

  • Write down the health concern you want checked.
  • Ask what records to bring and whether an exam is planned.
  • Ask how later questions and follow-up visits will be handled.

A question to keep

“Which parts of this plan can we discuss remotely later?”

Use the same notes about the medicine, pharmacy and cost for either setting. The location of the chair does not fill in those answers.

Gather the notes for either visit
