A reading guide to online care

The care map

# A care plan stretches past the screen.

An appointment is a place to talk through a concern. It is not a pledge to leave with a medicine.

## Keep these parts in view

- **Your concern comes first.** Describe the concern you want to discuss and the change you hope for. A treatment name can wait.

- **The health check has a purpose.** Ask: “Which parts of my health history do we need to discuss before making a plan?”

- **Tests need a reason.** The person treating you must arrange any tests needed to check your health, or send you to someone who can arrange them. Medical board guidance checked on 17 September 2026 calls for this. Ask who will arrange the next appointment.

- **The decision can stay open.** Ask about other ways to address the concern, including a plan without a new medicine.

- **The order needs a destination.** Ask which pharmacy would fill a prescription before agreeing to a plan.

- **The conversation needs a return path.** Get the follow-up plan in writing, including who will answer a new question.

## A medicine menu cannot replace a health check

Choosing from a treatment list cannot stand in for a check of your health. Guidance checked on 26 September 2026 says this. The publisher’s name is Federation of State Medical Boards.

Its role is to advise state medical boards, which can consider the guidance. It does not write a national law.

A useful question is: “How will you decide whether this treatment fits my concern?” Ask how they will check your health before they offer a package.

## Leave with a written outline

Look for the concern being addressed, the options discussed, the next task and the person responsible for it. If the plan is still unclear, ask for another explanation.

## Pick the next question

For the setting of the visit, read [Screen or room](/forks-in-the-road/). For the person offering care, read [The person treating you](/licence-map/).

This care guide sorts questions into a reading map; it offers neither clinic appointments nor medicines.
